Jesus is the Light. At St. Bart’s, we follow the Christian tradition of lighting a candle to remind us of the presence of Christ, not only in worship services but also in various gatherings such as Godly Play Sunday School and Morning Prayer. We often light the candle with matches left over from weddings—since churches are the site of many wedding receptions, matches can be found lying around for years! I don’t see this as random. It’s actually quite perfect.
You see, Jesus is the Light: our Lord, our Savior, our Redeemer, and also the Bridegroom to his church. Just as Jesus created an abundance of wine at the wedding at Cana, he provides the abundance of eternal life to us through his body and blood. Through his redeeming work, and our own faith in him, we become the “perfect match” in a union that lasts forever. The wedding banquet is ours.
In that lovely reassurance, there is also a call. We all know that an earthly marriage requires the commitment of two people. In a healthy marriage, it is not just one member who receives. During this season of giving and stewardship, I leave you with this question for prayer and discernment: In your perfect match with God, what is your response to all that you are receiving in the name of the Bridegroom?
