Brightening of the Purple

In the season of Advent, our tradition appoints the third Sunday as a time to rest from our preparation and rejoice in the nearness of the Lord’s coming! This Sunday, the candle we light is pink—a color chosen because it is a brightening of the color purple. That brightening calls us to rejoice, so the pink candle symbolizes “joy.”

Joy is central to the Christian life. It is not cheerfulness, nor is it happiness. Joy is our deep connection to God. For this reason, joy is constant. We have faith that life is okay even when it is not okay, because we know that Christ is in the world with us. This joy-filled knowledge gives us the peace that the world can never give us; nor can the world ever take it away.

All of our journeys are filled with unexpected turns. Wherever we are, God brings tidings of great joy. Follow this voice and let it pull you into a communion of joy where together we rejoice and say, “Glory to God!”
