Vestry

vestryThe word Vestry refers to both a room in the parish church and a meeting of parish officials. It was where the minister kept his vestments and prepared for the divine service. The name of the room came to signify the group of people who governed a parish because it was where they met. The name has not changed in over 400 years even though the meeting places of the vestry have.

In the Episcopal Church of the United States, vestries are formed to govern the secular business of the church., At St. Bartholomew’s, the vestry is a body of twelve lay members, elected by the congregation, who are responsible for the ecclesiastical and secular health of the church. The rector is an ex officio member of the vestry and chairs its meetings held on the second Tuesday of each month in the evening. The leading lay members of the vestry are the wardens of which there are two; the Sr. Warden and Jr. Warden. The Sr. Warden is appointed by the rector, and the Jr.Warden is elected by the vestry members. Each of their terms is one year. Vestry members, however, are elected for three-year terms.
