Thrift Shop & Nook

In 1966, a group of women who were members of the newly- established Episcopal mission in Poway decided to have a rummage sale. This sale went well, but the amount of remaining goods prompted the further decision to set up a thrift shop. This shop was much different from the store we see today in the Carriage Center on Poway Road. Initially goods were moved by wheelbarrow and “ankle express” -- and by devoted husbands and enthusiastic ladies who made many improvements to the stores. For many years the shop was in Old Poway, and in 1982 the Women Of St. Bart's (WSB) organized a formal Thrift Shop Board.

As the shop has entered its fifth decade it has seen many changes, but we have one faithful lady, Eileen Littlefield, who was there in the beginning and can still be found working in the back room! There has been outreach to the community after the Firestorms of 2003 and 2007. This is a continuing ministry which provides outreach to many organizations.

We currently have two full-time managers, two part-time truck drivers, and about 100 enthusiastic volunteers (not all of whom belong to St. Bart's) who enjoy working here. There is also “The Nook”, our small-scale store right on the St. Bart's campus, which is run by volunteers and is open at the Saturday 5 pm service and Sunday mornings between services. Today the main shop is located in the Carriage Center at 12845 Poway Road. Come browse our main store -- and The Nook at the church -- and enjoy the opportunities not only to save money but also to support this ministry. We look forward to seeing you!
