Sunday School News

St. Bart's Sunday School kids and Children's Ministry Team wish you and your family a very happy New Year. May 2009 bring you much joy, God's love, good health, and many blessings.

A NEW YEAR'S PRAYER
May God make your year a happy one!
Not by shielding you from all sorrows and pain,
But by strengthening you to bear it, as it comes;
Not by making your path easy,
But by making you sturdy to travel any path;
Not by taking hardships from you,
But by taking fear from your heart;
Not by granting you unbroken sunshine,
But by keeping your face bright,
even in the shadows;
Not by making your life always pleasant,
But by showing you when people and their causes need you most,
and by making you anxious to be there to help.
God's love, peace, hope and joy to you for the year ahead.

St. Bartholomew’s InlandNet — a networking ministry to help people find employment and cope with life’s challenges

The InlandNet is a dynamic network of friends, neighbors and business people helping each other achieve life’s objectives—particularly in the area of employment—through the application of common faith values.
InlandNet’s mission is to bring people together in a social setting to network and to assist those in transition or about to be in transition in finding new employment.

We encourage those who are not currently in transition to come by and give their guidance by providing insights into people and companies, they know, who can add to the networking process.

InlandNet meets on the first and third Wednesday of each month at 8:00 am in the Parish Hall at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church (16275 Pomerado Rd, Poway, CA 92064. Our next meeting is Wednesday, January 7, 2009 in the Parish Hall.  This is a free event, no fees will be charged and free coffee and donuts will be provided.

Our guest will be Chuck Siu, who many of you know, built and has kept a quality network that would be the envy of any networker.  As he said when he announced his last placement, “247. That's how many talented executives I sat down with in a one-on-one with between January 6 and May 16.”

Chuck will talk on the subject:

Building and Evaluating Quality In Your Executive Network

Too often, in transition executives execute the networking process without  any particular strategy in mind other than to generate direct leads into hiring managers as quickly as possible.  Unfortunately, this can lead to significant frustration when results are not immediately forthcoming. This begs the question: how does one define a "quality" professional network? How do you focus your networking time & effort in order to maximize your desired result?

Chuck Siu will address some essential topics on building quality into your professional network to generate better short and long term results:

1. The networking process revisited
2. Defining network quality
3. Networking heuristics and when they should be followed (or ignored)
4. Expectations & Results in a quality network

Who should attend InlandNet: a) Anyone who wants help in finding or changing a job, and b) anyone who wants to help others network or help with the search and networking process.

What do we need from the people of St. Bartholomew’s? We need anyone—irrespective of your job field—to join us and offer your experience to help others with employment. These Saints will be the people who, because of their experience and contacts, can offer hope and networking contacts to those in need. We invite you to come to the meetings, but you don’t have to attend; all you need do is make your experience, skills, and network names available to others. We need you—whatever your field and experience—to help others network and navigate through this difficult economic downturn.

Yes, count me in! I am willing to help others find employment. Please email the following information to wzettinger@stbartschurch.org: telephone #, preferred method of being contacted (telephone or email), your field of speciality, the companies you have worked for.

Questions? Call the church office at 858-487-2159 or e-mail The Rev. Bill Zettinger at wzettinger@stbartschurch.org, or Mr. Jerry Unterkoefler (who is organizing InlandNet) at Jerry@u2ma.com

Art at St. Bartholomew's

The Rev. Edith Sewell, our Deacon-in-Residence, is currently exhibiting here at church thirteen of her watercolors. Stop by the wall inside the south entryway to the church and take a look. David Curley, Communications Director, interviewed Rev. Edith while her paintings were being mounted.

Rev. Edith, some of us didn't know you've been an accomplished painter for a long time. How long have you been painting?
    I have painted much of my life, ever since childhood, using several media, oil, printmaking (etching) and the last ten years in watercolor. Oh yes, as a child I used crayola, pencil drawing, and charcoal, etc., in my hot little hand.

Where did you study art?
    I studied art briefly at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, GA, then in Kailua, Oahu I painted with the Windward Artists Guild of Hawaii. During the most recent ten years I have lived in San Diego, I have painted and studied in Nancy Oleksa's watercolor class. She teaches at the Escondido branch of Palomar Community College where she is an adjunct professor of art. She teaches color theory, technique and lets me develop my own style.

How do you approach your topics?
    I earned a master's degree in Asian and Western art history from the University of Hawaii in Honolulu. All these elements have influenced me in my painting. I learned to "develop an eye" as I walk around looking for subjects to paint. I have to be careful driving and walking in my search for landscape views so that I don't wreck the car or myself. I took photos of our dog "Fly" before I painted her portrait. For the cityscape I went down to Orange Avenue in Coronado for photographs from across the bay. My painting has a spiritual element for me, a humorous element, and I am aware of God's hand in all I feel in this work.

Thanks for sharing these thoughts with us. For our readers, here are the titles for the paintings on the wall:
    1. Callas; 2. Last Resting Place; 3. Endangered; 4. Wistful; 5. Rising Flower; 6. "FLY", our dog; 7. Descending; 8. Treasures; 9. Left Out; 10. Winter; 11. Up Creek; 12. Misty City; 13. Early Expectations
