Rock Band Summer Camp
A week long summer camp for beginners, immediate or advanced rockers.

St. Bartholomew's Academy of Music and Arts will be hosting this program from 9 am to 3 pm Monday through Friday, through August 14. The student needs to have a guitar or bass to be part of this program. We will supply keyboards and percussion. The camp program includes collaborating on creating an original song, creating your own CD cover and creating a t-shirt design. Days will be divided into group rehearsals; private and group coaching and instruction; and free time to jam. A grand finale concert will take place at the end of the week.

Rock Band Program

12 week sessions where guitar, drums, keyboard and bass work together in weekly rehearsals learning various “rock” styles of playing. There are individual lessons on each instrument weekly plus live performances as well as a theory and music reading component.

Primary Piano/Guitar/Electric Bass/ Theory & Ear Training

Now accepting students ages 6 through adult for small group (up to 4) piano, guitar or electric bass lessons. Lessons are one hour each week. Students learn to play at their own pace. Later they learn to orchestrate using the computer accompaniment of the digital piano. Instruction includes music theory, composer and styles, age appropriate games, ensemble playing, listening exercises and performance.

Private Lessons

Private lessons are ½ hour each week. These are more concentrated and faster paced lessons.

Preschool Piano for Children Ages 4 to 6

The classes will be one hour per week. Through rhythm, movement, ear training and keyboard instruction this class encourages music appreciation and keyboard skills. A parent is required to be present at the lesson time.

    Facilities

Digital Piano Lab

Full size Roland keyboards exactly produce the sound and feel of a grand piano. It has flexibility to simulate other instruments. You can play Bach on a harpsichord and experience the thrill of full orchestral accompaniment to your solo.

Ear Training Center

Listening activities strengthen rhythm, pitch, interval and melody recognition. A computer records and analyzes the vocal pitch and rhythm – a “must” for choir singers.

Music theory software reinforces keyboard concepts at all ability levels. Use with MIDI for composition.

Our Instructors

Alia Jyawook is a multi-instrumentalist who plays guitar, bass, cello, and piano. She studied music at Elmhurst College in Illinois where she received her BA in Music with a certificate of performance in classical guitar. Alia has been teaching music for the past five years, including the high school level. She performs cello and guitar regularly at weddings around San Diego County. Alia has played in many bands and has had the opportunity to tour the United States. Currently she plays in two bands here in San Diego.

Dennis Short teaches guitar, bass, and piano. A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he majored in Guitar Performance at Duquesne University’s School of Music. Having taught for close to eight years, Dennis has much experience with all ages and styles of music from classical to jazz to rock. In Pittsburgh Dennis taught at Community College of Allegheny County, taught and co-developed G.I.F.T. a non-profit organization to promote music education in lower income areas, and taught privately through local music stores and his own music studio, Short Music Studios. Dennis directed music at his Church in Pittsburgh and has performed with several major Gospel Choirs. He is currently writing worship music and pursuing a career in the Christian music industry.

Yevgenia Truksa began her piano studies at the age of 6, studying at E. Darzinš music school for the gifted in Riga, Latvia. At the age of 12, she made her first public appearance with the school’s orchestra, performing the W.A. Mozart Piano Concerto No. 20 in D Minor, K.466. After graduating from E. Darzinš music school in 1998, Ms. Truksa studied at the Latvian Music Academy for three years, majoring in both piano and organ performance.

In 2001 Ms. Truksa was awarded a scholarship to study in the United States with inter­nationally acclaimed Russian pianist Mark Zeltser. In 2004 she completed her Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance, studying under the guidance of Russian pianist and the Director of Louisiana Piano Series International, Dr. Nikita Fitenko. Ms. Truksa recently completed her Master of Music degree at Texas Christian University where she studied with Dr. Tamas Ungar. Currently, Ms. Truksa is studying with Mr. Daniel Pollack at University of Southern California.

Ms. Truksa has performed numerous solo piano, organ, and chamber music recitals throughout Europe, including recitals in the former Soviet Union, France and Finland. Ms. Truksa became a national finalist and third-prize winner at the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Piano Competition, and the Prize winner at the 54th Wideman Piano Competition in 2004. She was also a winner of the TCU Concerto Competition in 2005.

Ms. Truksa has performed in master classes for internationally acclaimed pianists Veda Kaplinsky, Oxana Yablonskaya, Joseph Banowetz, Arturs Ozolins, and Euo Soo Son.
